Fallout Factions: The Disciples (part one)

I wish I had been a Fallout fan earlier. My oldest kid was way into it, and I remember listening as she played the hell out of Fallout 3, New Vegas, and Fallout 4. I’m a huge Skyrim fan, so you would think I would have played sooner. Really, it took the new series to get me to look at it again, and now I really can’t look back.

I love the Atom-Punk vibe of the whole thing. Alternate histories are a hell of a thing, too, and the games and show have strung together a pretty fascinating look at a future that looks a lot like our past had a baby with an old Flash Gordon serial.

I had the Welcome to Nuka-World starter for Fallout Factions, and sold it, thinking I wouldn’t get back to it anytime soon. I still had the Disciples set, and decided I would paint them up before making up my mind on more minis from the franchise.

I think I want more minis from the franchise. Modiphius has made some pretty cool minis, and the hard plastic kit for the Disciples is pretty keen. I was thrown at first because they’re a true-scale 32mm, so the features, hands, and feet are smaller than I’ve grown used to. But they’re fun to paint, take an oil wash well, and look pretty good once all is said and done.

I ordered the character command minis for this group, I should have one of them done for the next update!

  1. Glad to hear the TV show is bringing in new people. I wasn’t that into the first season and gave up on it but I see nearly universal enthusiasm for it so I must be an outlier! Even more glad to hear you like the minis. They look fantastic and I know what you mean about the slightly odd (and small) scale. Eyes are tricky, particular, though Modiphius has teased that they’re somehow going to increase the scale of newer minis to make them easier to paint without invalidating the older ones. I can’t work out how they’re going to do that but it sounds positive to me, if they can pull it off.

    1. That would be wild to see them pull off, I can’t think of how. If they went heroic scale, it would look weird, and shifting up the scale would be weird. Fingers crossed!’

My oldest kid is a die-hard Fallout fan and was pretty tepid on the series. I played a little and really enjoyed it, but season 2 brought in Deathclaws and they did it with giant freaking puppets that looked amazing, so my old ass was thrilled with it! I know it’s not for everyone, but it could have just been universally terrible I guess!

      1. Agreed on the changes they’re promising. It could backfire if they aren’t careful but time will tell!

I admit that I skew towards if I’ve played the video game(s) then I’m probably not going to want to watch the same thing over in a TV show, though the Fallout show is not closely tied to the games or at least Season One wasn’t so I guess I can’t complain there. The special effects are excellent in the series from what I saw. Power Armor looks so real and it easily could have been very CGI looking instead so kudos to Amazon there.

      2. Building practical suits saved it, I think! I watched a behind the scenes, and between that and the full size puppets for some of the monsters they were really able to sell some stuff visually!

      3. Practical effects are always great to see. I wish more things used them. Seeing the models used in Star Wars still ranks as one of the cooler things I’ve seen in a museum.
