MCP: The Abomination!

As I continue to mend, my stamina is picking up a little and I’m able to paint a little more! Just finished up Emil Blonsky, AKA The Abomination! He’s a delicious figure for sure!

He’s also positively huge, easily twice the size of the Hulk and close to Hulkbuster in stature. Very cool!

I’m still trying to figure out if I want to put him in a Hydra group or a Criminal Syndicate group, the big factor here being which group I’m going to get rid of. The syndicate has some cool models, but the Hydra group has a ton of Jack Kirby coolness that I love. On the other hand, Nazis. I hate those guys.

After assessing my overall storage capacity and several near death experiences over the last few years, I’m leaning heavily towards narrowing the collection down to one or two affiliations. The collector in me is shrieking like a gibbon at the moment, but I really don’t want to leave a ton of minis behind if something does actually catch up to me! That might sound a little morbid, but we all go sometime, and I would like to leave as little of my hobby behind to clean up as possible!

Enough of the maudlin, I’m hankering for some 15mm action!

Marvel Crisis Protocol: Jean Grey Proxy

I am back after a seven month battle with my pancreas that saw two hospitalizations, a major surgery, and an inability to eat food due to the cessation of my digestive tract. The surgery was undertaken to fix that issue, and I am happily able to eat now! I apologize for the absence, although my pancreas has informed me that it will happen again.

With that out of the way, though, let’s look at some minis! I love the X-Men, and, while I was a fan of the Jim Lee costumes that debuted 33 years ago, I don’t think they’re the end-all, especially when it comes to the original five students of Charles Xavier. Jean’s costume in particular never really gelled for me.

When the Krakoa storyline started a few years ago, I was really happy to see Jean’s first non-school uniform show up again, and spent some time looking for a suitable proxy model to use.

Before anyone rattle a pitchfork too mightily in my direction, I have a staunch take on proxy use! I always strive to own the original model, since I am playing a game that someone spent a lot of time and resources on, I want to support that. I also make sure that my opponent is cool with me using a proxy before we play. This allows cool battles like X-Men VS X-Men, with an obvious time travel element thrown in because of the costume variations!

I found this file of Jean in her Hickman era costume, and here’s how she looks painted up!

While I’m not 100% sold on the pose, I think the sculpt is actually pretty good!

I really do hope that Atomic Mass Games are able to branch out and explore more costume designs in future minis, because there’s a vast and wondrous world of X-Threads beyond Jim Lee, but let’s face it; those costumes were iconic, immortalized in the ’90s cartoon, and nostalgia sells war dollies better than any other marketing tool!

Another proxy is coming next!

MCP: The Juggernaut

I am blaming my friend Randon for this. I just fell helplessly back in love with Marvel Crisis Protocol. It’s not entirely his fault, the models are incredible, fun to paint, and really easy to collect… but I’m blaming him, primarily because he’s a fun guy to pal around with, but he’s also an incredible painter, which can get the inspiration juices flowing pretty easily!

The first model off the workbench is Cain Marko, half-brother of Charles Xavier and the wielder of the Crimson Gem of Cyttorak… but you probably know him as the Juggernaut!

This model is incredible! He’s so dynamic, and the base alone conveys the brutal stompiness of the character in such a huge way! I also love that Cain just grabbed a stoplight to hit someone with on his way to the fight!

Juggernaut is one of those characters that I’ve loved since I was a kid. He’s a bad guy most of the time, but he seems to have some redeemable qualities. There was a run in the early 2000’s when he was a member of the X-Men that I loved, especially his friendship with Sammy the Squidboy. Good stuff, and it still hits me like a ton of bricks 20 years later!

There’s a bunch more MCP on the way, but Juggernaut is a great way to kick off this year’s projects! He also lets me check off a hobby bingo square, since he’s been sitting partially finished on a shelf for almost two years! Woohoo!

Marvel Zombies: She-Hulk

I have had a long history with She-Hulk. I really loved the Hulk when I was a kid, which is probably why I love orcs. Big, Green, and Dumb is a default source of joy for me!

I was about eight years old when the first She-Hulk comics came out, and I liked them, but I didn’t get the humor because I was freaking eight years old. As I got older, she became pretty entertaining to read, and as an adult, she became a bit of a favorite.

Turns out Big, Green, and Smart is pretty fun, too!

I even enjoyed the MCU She-Hulk series on Disney+, but that’s not surprising. As most people who grew up with The Trial of the Incredible Hulk as the closest thing to cool live action super heroes will tell you, we’re a bit spoiled right now, and there’s some pretty good stuff being sent our way. Also, I’m easily entertained!

The She-Hulk sculpt from CMON’s Marvel Zombies game is pretty dynamic, and easily captures her in a heroic pose, getting ready to punch some shambler into paste! I’m happy to add her to the ranks of finished models, and it’ll be cool seeing an A-Force team pop up as I get more Avengers models finished!

Marvel Zombies: Groot! Groot! Groot!

I love Groot! His miniature from Marvel Crisis Protocol is pretty sweet, but alas, I don’t have a personal aircraft hangar to store MCP figs, so I’ll have to do with these Marvel Zombies figs from Zombicide.

It’s a pretty solid sculpt, with plenty of room to play with tints and really break away from the monotony of painting a guy made of wood.

Here he is with Drax, the galaxy’s greatest saxaphone player!

Marvel Zombies: Drax the Destroyer

Still playing catch-up on the never-ending mass of miniatures from the Marvel Zombies Zombicide game from CMON! Today it’s all about Drax. Or Mr. Destroyer, if you’re feeling fancy.

I’m pretty consistently surprised with the quality of these figures from CMON, considering the first Zombicide minis I painted were not the best of experiences!

Also, I LOVE that these miniatures have base details already. That’s a really great addition that goes a long way towards selling the mood of the game!

I still haven’t played a game of Zombicide, but it could happen. Regardless, I’m happy to have these around for any super-hero action that might come along!

Marvel Zombies: The Sandman

I’m an absolute dork for the stupid-ass villains that plague Spider-Man’s life. The dumber, the better. It’s a real testament to the design genius of the old Marvel art stable that these guys still resonate with me half a century after I discovered them as a kid!

Sandman will be kicking off my collection of Spider foes from the Marvel Zombies Zombicide game from CMON. I’m really digging the added sand work on the base, he was a lot of fun to paint!

Next up on the Spider-foes docket is the Scorpion!

15mm Wargaming: Make Mine (Tiny) Marvel!

I’m still on this weird-ass quest to find the perfect scale, and I’m afraid it’s leading me to this whole new world of resizing existing STL files to smaller scales to see what scratches what itch the best.

Lately, that itch has been tiny super heroes, and that scale appears to be 15mm. I have been taking some regular 40mm files from C27 miniatures and printing them off at 15mm scale on my Saturn, and the results have been really fun.

And really frustrating. The figs not only get super tiny, they’re also super fiddly and really come off the supports alot, even though I’m painstakingly supporting the damned things. Oh well, live and learn. We’ll see how long I stick to it, but for now, the madness shall run its course!

First off the plates was this tiny Captain America:

I was pretty happy with the results, and really happy to see that Speed Paints and a quick highlight look FANTASTIC! Plus, this is a half hour to an hour of a paintjob, so wins all around!

Here’s Cyclops:

One down side is that my focus is getting freaked out by the penny, so I’ll probably start shooting without the scale comparison. Still, it’s fun to see how freaky tiny these guys are!

Time for some Southern charm:

And, finally, my absolute favorite character from Silver Age Marvel, MODOK. I am absolutely smitten with how this little maniac turned out!

Full transparency, I painted these before a medical emergency in November that pretty much knocked me on my ass and is still effecting me. My hand-eye coordination is pretty messed up, and I can’t hold a brush for very long, but physical therapy will help with that. I’m just trying to catch up with projects that I had been meaning to post about prior!

I’ll be trying to get more of these printed off soon, but I’m going to have to find someone to print them for me, since the doc says I can’t run resin anymore. Poo. Still, no use dwelling on that, I still have a mountain of gray plastic to tackle as I get back on my feet from surgery!

Marvel Crisis Protocol, Part One

We got our demo copy of Marvel Crisis Protocol at Shiv Games Games today, and I wasted no time at all diving in to the box. It’s a pretty impressive affair, with ten Marvel characters, rules, tokens, and terrain crammed into the box;

I’ll have more on the minis after I get them painted, but I can honestly say I am really happy with the look and quality of the miniatures. The hard plastic looks great, and they are pretty easy to put together with the included instructions.

I would say the quality of the sculpts is a bit higher than Fantasy Flight Games’ Star Wars: Legion, but not quite as crisp as Wyrd’s Malifaux line. You also don’t need an engineering degree to put them together, so take that, Malifaux!

The minis took about three hours to Assemble (pun intended), and they look fantastic after a quick zenithal priming session!

I’ll be tackling the paint jobs on these beautiful figs in the next installment!
